I know what chevypower is talking about with the 1.8L lasers. my mate has one and it absoloutly flies for a little 4 banger. Impressed the hell out of me thats for sure!
As far as the magna goes you better watch out. I've seen a few of those run some very impressive times down the strip and had my *** handed to me by a few vr-x's too. But I'd still give one a go as they are very much a 'wednesday engine' type of car.... some fly, most die. |

The 3.0L V6s were that much of a slouch though ... depends on the tune of the vehicle .... in the models when the V6s first came out ... they were a crappy. But the TE models (I think ... about 97) were much better with the 3.0L in them. I'd say it'd be a close one though. One of my work colleagues has a 97 Altera 3.0L V6 auto .... it goes pretty damn swiftly ... but still no 3.5L though. I think the 3.0L V6 put out approx 145kW ... whereas the VRX 3.5L put out 163kW (then the Ralliart put out 180kW from a SOHC motor as well)

merlin what happens is this. After driving a bit hard in power mode, 3rd gear will hold at 60 even when i'm not accelerating. The whole car shudders as if the transmission is trying to get into 4th but can't. Then when I pull up at lights the transmission clunks into 1st.
Strangely after I drive the car a bit more conservatively in ecom mode the problem completely dissapears. |

I think it would be interesting to watch, it could very easily come down to driver skill rather then the actual cars - who can get the better start, although the condition of the engines will also play a part. I know I'd like to watch and see how it works out...

Who cares? Why the hell were you doing that speed on Wellington road? It's an 80 zone tops, I'm pretty sure up that end it's 70.

They have changed to 80 now (on that part) you are quite right, it used to be 100km/h all the way (with 10% tolerance)

Automatic lasers can't beat a standard six full stop. No ifs no butts it's written in the gospel. A manual 1.8 N14 nissan pulsar woud destroy any laser especialy an automatic KF.

its a KJ2 (built by Mazda, not Ford), i cant comment on the KFs, but family has owned many Ford Falcon 6s from EA to AU, and i have driven just about every BA model, i will say that the performance from 0-100 between the Laser and EF-AU 6 both cars being automatic, is very similar, drive them both, floor the crap out of them, line them up, but dont tell me stuff when you havent driven both, and i dont care if the Laser was rated an offical "slow" i am just putting the stock EF 6's performance in to perspective, to give people a reason to want more power LOL (if power is what they want, and are expecting from it) - I am looking at a Navara STR diesel for my next car, so its not like I am trying to have a car that out accelerates everyone. Nissan Pulsar manual? havent driven one of those either, but yes manual definately has the advantage for performance when it comes to launching.

One tip just get a electronic direct injection diesel, non of this mechanical pre combustion chamber crap a friend of ours got a hyundai terracan diesel sounds like a tractor and probably not much smoother. Why not toyots they have a great 4.2 turbo diesel that their putting into almost everything they build.

Mate...... Have you ever heard of a thing called TORQUE ??? Plays a big part in acceleration, actually power doesent really mean much at all. How about you start quoting some torque figures for the different cars/engines, its generally a pretty good indicator of a cars potential. I mean, we have to remember here that most road going cars (generally) have a fairly low final gear ratio. Who really cares how much power to weight a laser has? I have raced my then stock EB against a whole pile of small cars and have pretty much destroyed them all (at the racetrack...) lancer, laser, pulsar........ The proof is in the pudding. Mike

yeah, if they put the 4.2 in the Hilux that would be awesome! I read somewhere the 4.2 T/D will be replaced by a 4.4 Twin Turbo V8 diesel in the Land Cruiser, and wanting a crew cab 4X4 ute, if it were between the Hilux and Nav, they both look great in my opinion, the diesel models are similar in power and torque, but the Nissan is $35000 and the Toyota is over $50k - Nissan is better off road than the new Hilux, and is rated to tow more. But i am going way off the Magna/Falcon topic now but that was my reasoning for looking at the STR diesel.
