One way to keep the plant ticking over I guess. And keeping some sort of momentum until fresh product arrives this year.

No brand has gone backwards long term after discontinuing local production and I am sure that Ford wont be the 1st. Good times ahead for ford I believe.

The Kuga doesn't seem to be setting the world on fire with 378 sales compared to 1,747 for the ix35, 1,574 for the CX-5 and 1,388 for the RAV4.

so true, at least in part. I can't buy the products I want at any price in Australia even though they are available overseas. All I want is a manual wagon, but I can't but a Ford so we've now got an i30 and a sportswagon instead of a focus and a mondeo

Yep fair enough. So 39% of local sales of the total is just insignificant I guess.
I and the 39% of people should just suck it up I guess. That's a lot of sales they will miss out on and I sure hope their business plan covers that instant loss of sales.

Did Ford achieve 30,000 units local production for 2013 (Falcon pass/comm, Territory)? If not, what are the consequences re government grants?

Yup, Kuga is a great car. but Ford, in Australia haven't the brand power to command the $$$"s they are asking for them. Great car. Deserves better.

They have new Territory and Falcon later in the year. No doubt dealers will be given huge incentives to put new demos on and clear runouts.

They would no longer be considered a major manufacturer and they would lose their funding ie they are completely screwed.

I think Ford will be negotiating with the government to have that number revised me thinks.

The govt will not bend over so it will be interesting to see if that will cause Ford to reconsider FGmk3 or FH or whatever was going to be.

Kuga name needs to find its feet it the market - that takes time.
378 is bad when comparing it to the more established compact SUV names out there, but its alot better than what the tired Ford Escape was doing.

I do wonder though, would the sales be stronger if they had kept the Escape name - we'll never know?

Interesting conundrum given that they (Ford) were given $34 Million of federal government funds for the 201X car (FH/whatever). If they didn't release the car and shut shop early, they'd have to pay it back because I think there were some watertight conditions that went along with that funding agreement.

I dont think the Kuga/Escape name has anything to do with it because there were no such teething problems with the Tribute/CX5
Its the maker's name, not that model's name that is the real issue.

Aussie car buyers Thai one on

Quote:
THAI car manufacturers supplied twice as many vehicles as their Australian counterparts in Australia last year as the domestic factories of Ford, Holden and Toyota continued to surrender sales market share to imports.

Australian-made cars accounted for a record low 10.4 per cent of Australian vehicle sales in 2013, compared with 25 per cent just eight years ago, according to official VFACTS sales figures from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI).

Thai imports, on the other hand, snared 20 per cent of the Australian market in 2013 – more than doubling their share since 2005.

In just one year, vehicle volumes from Thailand grew 32.9 per cent, from 171,878 units in 2012 to 228,479 units last year, while Australian-made car sales fell 15.2 per cent, to 118,510 vehicles – less than half the tally for the locally bred cars in 2005.

and to put it further in perspective, Ford alone sold nearly a million cars in China last year. December Ford sales alone topped the Aussie Ford sales for the year.

The more I see of this the more it makes me think that Ford should forget advertising their imports and
start plugging the heck out of Falcon and Territory, the whole thing seems like a failed experiment IMO...

In general the trend appears to be less sales ,except for a few odd ones keeping the numbers up for some brands, if it wasn't for the odd better performing models, total brand by brand sales would be crap.

Considering that supposedly lose money on the local cars then their profit margin will be better having sold less.... Sounds Irish.
