Ban people who use SMS style posts. They make my eyes bleed and my head ache.

I wan't to hear what the bloke who has lived/breathed/fixed & f^^^^d Fords has to say on Ford matters, regardless if he spent more time under a car or at the track than learning how to spell.

SMS talk irritates me more than someone who doesn't have a strong grip on the written word.

The requirements for signing up to any forum should be a test.

1- Please define bought and brought

2- Explain when to use a full stop

3- Explain the difference between weather and whether

4- Explain the difference between their, there and they're

Should the user fail with any of these questions, then a virus should automatically be sent to their computer and it should explode!!!

thanks!!!!
I fully agree with DJR David.

I have never made comment about this because I know how sensitive and defensive certain Forum members can get about even the most well-meaning suggestions.

And it appears that these certain members are mostly the ones with a poor knowledge of English grammar etc.

The incorrect uses of "there" instead of "their", and "brought" instead of "bought" are particularly common, together with "whether" instead of "weather".

EGs: "There FPV was brought from a dealership"
"What was the whether like at the car show?"

To me, these obvious mistakes reflect badly on the intelligence of owners of Fords, including expensive and nice looking ones.

So the general consensus is to ban SMS style posting? I think that's fair enough

Oh by god yes! Agree completely! Just an FYI, nowhere did I target a specific forum (although the aforementioned ones in particular are classic examples), it was only a generalization.

One of the reasons I love AFF is that compared to most other forums it has the nicest / most switched on people.

You can and will get a warning for SMS Txt typing.

It is in the warning system. Mods do and will issue users, with warnings for these types of posts.

Gee anyone remember how bad it was years ago?? It is definitely a lot better now.

teechers r 2 blaim m8

John Laws has a wide vocabulary and can express himself very well but it was not always the case. He didn't have a formal education as a youngster. He taught himself by reading as a jackaroo. If he got to a word he didn't understand he would look it up in the dictionary and learn five words above it and five words below it thus improving himself.

I think it is a shame that the language I love is dying. As a senior teacher I have seen crops of teachers coming out from university that can't spell. There is little hope they will be able to teach children skills they can't model themselves in their prepared activities or even in notes home to parents in school diaries.

The good wife and I both teach English. She is a spelling nazi even ringing the television stations if they have misspelt anything in their programs. I have corrected work so often that misspellings jump out from the page at me from menus and signs - from EVERYWHERE.

I once wrote to a Japanese Model company offering to translate their gibberish into Australian for a free kit (or two). I am still waiting for a reply.

I am happy to rewrite some of the sponsor advertisements for a discount! ( you know who you are John )

If we were all so great at spelling and grammar, then perhaps we should all be English teachers.

Agree 100%, Some people just arn't that good around computers as well, this can lead to some hard to read posts.

Not one to boast, but I got 50.

That being said, sometimes the odd illiterati are a little fun like the fellow who commented on the bad mechanic.
However, tests like these do weed out the morons - the ones who think grammar is the old woman watching tv in the front room. These people should feel a little shame about their lack of command of the English language, it can only encourage them.
For laughs though, read your local paper and witness the decline in literacy standards.

Some people need to get a life. if you can't understand someones psotings, either ask them what they mean or forget about it.

Where do you draw the line? If they get under 5 out of 10, they're booted off the forum or not allowed to join?

Seriously, not everyone is word perfect. Not everyone went right through school. Or even went to grade 10. Some of the smartest car people I know couldn't spell their name to save their lives, but throw a spanner, welder or spray gun in their hand and they'll fix the problem or create a trophy winner.

Personally I see this thread as a waste of time and effort.
