I think a few people did jump ship for pretty much the same reasoning. Some Ford guys just couldn't cope with the AU looks and to get the performance you needed the AU3 XR8 220kw windsor just to stay with the Holden.
The tide has turned.
For me there was a number of reasons:

1. Until the BA 5.4, just about all Ford V8's were just underwhelming. You had to spend some serious clams for little improvement overall. Exceptions where 220 XR8 and the stroker.

2. To me, the AU was just a sad looking sack of ****. Its a personal thing, many like it tho. Ford seriously f@rked up on that one. Even they admit it.

The tide has turned, *somewhat*. The Ford V8's still lag behind those of Holden, but not nearly as much as they once did. Again, Ford have concentrated on their "hi-po" six pots. The XR6T is a pearler. Ford's sixes always seem to overshadow their V8 stablemates.

Ford was once king of local V8 performance. Will they ever be back? Don't think so. Not for a while.

Ford need to bite the bullet and release a *REAL* GTHO, with the emphasis on HO.

Bring back Homologation and REAL production car racing. THAT is was improves the breed more than anything.

first up, congratulations on the purchase, and hopefully you get back into a ford soon enough.

as for the engines, i'm a ford fan no matter what, but it seems that fords attitude is, well, our engines will beat theirs when you modify them. to me, thats not really good enough. they need to bring them out equal or better than the opposition so that any modification will just increase that advantage.

I think the reason the Windsor is looked upon in Australia as expensive to get going fast is the fact Ford Aus used the base parts on it. HO manifolds, E7 heads, tiny MAF and TB, etc, etc. Until AU they were just the base output 302 slotted into Falcons. And no doubt the AU only got the good bits because Ford US had a shit load of them lying around.

I'd have to agree on the opinion here on the Windsor if you weren't mechanically minded. If you didn't mind getting your hands dirty and having a go for yourself that same Windsor would be something special. I for one dont mind getting in there and having a go. Some guys here would prefer just to buy a good base like a XR6T or an LS1 and put some bolt ons for easy grunt. I say each to their own.

Congrats on the purchase FFO. The LS1 edit has improved a lot since the old days. I still can't get over how easily some examples with minimal mods have pulled 12s.

i guess this means the clevo is a heap of shit too? i best be getting a smokie ls1 for the ute then nothing wrong with the old winsor just think about it for a moment. its been around for like 40 years or somthing and ya wonder why it hasent got the grunt of an engine thats fairly new and has more cubes. if anything blame ford australia for still useing it for so long . but dont lay crap on the winsor. and to say all ford v8s are crap is just stupid and realy shows your ignorance.

Congrates on the Purchase FFO. Might see you on LS1 forums then. Easy mods to a VT will get you 12's. I'm at 13.1 with a WH Caprice so you shouldnt have too many probs. What area are you in as i can recommned some shops to assist you (without blowing the bank)

Nice car mate. I can see your logic in purchasing a GenIII powered Holden. I have been interested in them many of times. Enjoy your new ride mate.

With minor mods you'll see over 260kw no worries.

Thanks VooDoo,

I do have one question, I'll be looking at an Edit, but want to maintain nice drivability around town and maintain my present excellent fuel consumption. Possible wit Edit?

I'd also like to improve the V8 note with some sort of a zorst. But again, want a reasonable daily driver.

Edit: Oh, Im in Sydney (North)

Well done on the purchase

Now you dont know how lucky you are ;) just drop into "SAMS" and let him do his magic.
He will advise you on every option available, with NO BULL.
I know guys that live here in Melbourne ;) that have driven all the way to SAMS for a LS1 edit tune.

His phone no is on the LS1 web site.

Jim

ps, your fuel economy and drivability will improve with the exhaust and tune.

I do like my old Fords, but I have been buying Holdens.
I do like my Ford XA coupe, and I do like the V8 coupes.
Holden and HSV are the only ones who have them, so I bought a Monaro.
If Ford one day built a V8 coupe, I would give that a go.
Would be nice to see them build one, maybe a Phase 5 next to a 4 door GTHO !

Gotta say, best car I have owned yet. She flies, well compared to the EF XR6 she certainly does. And better fuel economy to boot.

Still have blue blood through my veins though.

But why? I wanted a powerful rear driver thats was relatively new, and well, AU's are just plain ugly, and the 5.0L just does'nt cut it.

I will be back. As soon as the 5.4's start dropping in price.

The 5.7 was a giant leap from the old oil leaking petrol guzzling Aussie5.0, but if you think the LS1 feels good, wait until you migrate into the 6.0.

Don't listen to others about the oil, piston slap, etc. I never had any of those problems. But if you are going to flog it, like any engine it will break.

Ford have been building a specific range of V8 coupes for 45 years. It's called Mustang.

I do know what you mean though. I am toying with the idea of buying a Monaro. Doubtful it will happen though, more to do with the money than the car.
