What I'm trying to get my head around - is what exactly could you do with a car like this?

It's incredible that someone could spend around $40,000 in 1987 and stick this in a shed. It has delivery km's only (39km)... so it basically has NEVER been driven in 25 years...

So - my first comment is... If the buyer had thrown $40,000 into a savings bank account (with lets say a 5% interest rate) the bank account would read about $135,000 today...

The Seller is asking $150,000... so lets say after negotiation, fees to the selling agent, storage and maintenance on the car, etc he'd probably take home around the same figure... With less risk (surely the buyer couldn't have predicted the rise in aussie muscle cars in 1987... so I wonder what his goal was for his investment?)

Why have something like this stored without enjoying it for all that time?? At the end of the day it is a car... even if it was driven for a 500km year, it would still only have about 12500km on it - and it wouldn't have taken anything away from the 'wow' factor from such a low mile car...

2nd Point... Do you think that anyone who buys this will actually drive it?? If you bought it and drove it - wouldn't it basically be rendering the last 25 years of its 'museum' life pointless...

And also - how would it drive?? Everything has basically been sitting still for 25 years... and perhaps it was started and run every now and again, but anything in the wheels, brakes, diff, tailshaft, etc... all haven't really moved since 1987... Would it be any good to drive at all??

I just don't get it?!?!?!

I'm all for low mile, one owner cars that have been used and looked after all their life...
I think it is fantastic that someone could keep such a 'museum' piece to remind us what things were like all those years ago...

But - I simply just don't get it...

Yeah but you cant walk out to your garage, have a beer or a wine and touch and polish your $40,000 cash. Its an emotional thing, it may not have been the smartest investment decision, but over all those years it really hasnt cost him a lot in having something like that sitting in his garage.

Personally one day I really really want a EL GT, they are ugly and different - like me.

137 kw, 345 nm. 0-100 in 7.5 secs and the 400m in 15.5

Not exactly a rocket by todays standards but quick 25 years ago.

I wonder what the responses would be if it were an XY GT (HO??) with 30 kms on the clock?? I am sure there would be a lot of people here banging on about "oh, if I had the money ...." The guy is probably an investor who has said to himself, a 1 in a 1000 run is going to be worth some money in 20-30 years, more so than something that I am going to drive around and devalue for the same period.
(I wish I had been able to realise 10, 20, 30 grand appreciation on any car I had bought back in the 70s or 80s!!)

Why does this car have to have been an investment???

Maybe the owner was a genuine lover of these cars and simply wanted a mint original example.....

Too many people are fixated with the values of these cars and ulterior "investment" motives of collectors, is it too much to suggest he was just a collector, nothing more, nothing less....

Exactly, some people collect things just for the enjoyment of owning them and admiring them, nothing more and never have any intention of selling them. Perhaps he is a true Brock fan that intended on keeping this car forever. Perhaps he intended on passing it on to the kids but recent hard times have forced him to sell. It is very difficult to know what his story is.

I for one love the fact somebody has had enough discipline to lock something like this away and keep it so original. There are plenty of others out there if somebody wants to buy one to drive. Keep this one the way it is as it makes a good story.

Beaut car.
If I had squillions, then I reckon it would be a great car to have.
The only concern is that if I parked it somewhere, some idiot would key the damn thing, or bang into it and drive off.

Yeah, I saw that too. Maybe it's another low km example.

As for it not being used, I agree with most others here in that a car should be driven. Just as a lot of older greek folks leave the plastic covers on their new couches. If you have something, you should use it as intended but still look after it.

This literally made me laugh out loud

Being of Greek descent, I have seen the plastic couch sydnrome quite a lot in my younger years

I think kudos to the original purchaser of this fine vehicle. It is his money and he chose to keep watch over a VL Group A "Plus Pack" for all these years.

Who are we to judge...many people make foolish fiscal decisions every day......I am glad we have car nuts out there like this. Both on the Red and Blue side

What's the relevance???? Why do people compare cars from different decades as some kind of reason to diminish value??

Oh I understand owning a fantastic car, and the emotional attachment... My wife could tell you dozens of stories about the car taking priority over other things in our lives...

But I just can't simply get my head around the fact that it has 'never' been driven...

As someone said previously... it's like owning a 1:1 scale Biante Model of the car...

At the end of the day it's a car... that was built to be driven...
If you buy it and don't drive it... I just cannot comprehend that mentality...

Of course a VE SV6 would flog it. I would be questioning Holden however if they couldn't manage to get a late model V6 to go faster than a mid 80s HDT. It's called progress mate.

In saying that stats don't mean anything to me. This car is one of the reasons why I love the VL. I just love everything about it even though it wasn't that fast when new.

Just think about it for second. What would people look at if you were driving either? The plain, boring VE SV6? or the VL SS Group A?

Even 2 to 3 years is a long time in automotive performance terms, to try to "value" a car based on its relative performance to newer/current models is not only naive but largely irrelevant.

The only performance measures that are relevant are how it compared to models of the same year, and even then that makes no allowance for intangibles such as limited run homologation specials, their significance and racing pedigree/history.

You have totally missed the point

This isnt about what car is fastest, best handling or bang for your buck type of exercise

This is about one of Australias greatest touring car drivers and the fine vehicles he released through HDT during the 80s

I couldnt give two hoots about some 4wd twin turbo Nissan that when tuned gives out 1000kw through all four wheels

Matter of fact, i wouldnt even turn my head when it goes past me in the street......

A nice clean HDT vehcile will do that every time. Because i respect the fact that it is Aussie made.
