i always hovered around 72kgish.. 5ft11.. smoked from the age of 16 to 22.. when i quit i instantly put on weight as i started eating to make up for the smoking, BOY did i eat. got up to 106kg!! (you woudn't think i was that much by looking at me, sure i was a little tubby, but didn't look 106kg). Since then i just focussed on eating better, doing a bit of exercise. I don't drink soft drink at all, don't drink alcohol at all, (both were previously quite active hobbies for me) and i eat better food, more fresh meat, fish, fresh vegies and only ever have wholemeal bread. Gluten is a killer for me so i stay away from that too.

Don't eat Pizza, Lasagne, most types of pasta, don't have milkshakes...

basically i eat relatively boring things now, but you can still make some pretty tasty stuff, and have the odd treat.

I'm now back to 70kg, which is a bit under what i'd want to be at, but i feel relatively good. Not sure if this helps anyone, but here it is anyway.

i did a crash diet where i'd only eat a few slices of bread a day and heaps of water.. and occasional meat ... that didn't go too well .. after a month i was about 85kg down from 100kg i did also about 3-4 laps of my block during the "diet". .. than the weight just piled on and i'm back up to about 100kg again .. i am just starting now to slowly eat the right food and not make the mistake like last time

Yeah thats the norm with crash deits....they dont work long term, The human body is designed to store fat and starving the body of food only makes matters, they key is to up the metabolism by eating at least 5 small healthy meals during the day and backing off the carbs after 3pm in the arvo...

With Vino302 on this one ... also i really don't eat bread that much anymore ... it's one thing that can increase your weight as well. I have backed off my diet a bit ... so I am not losing anymore ... I am sitting happily at 85kg ... but still retaining a healthy diet though.

I'm down 12kg, still another 8kg to go.

I've already dropped 2 clothing sizes, starting to get annoying though, as I don't really want to get new clothes until I get to my target weight.

i only weigh 60kgs.. really need to bulk up more!

im gonna be so screwed when my metabolism slows down in a few years. its amazingly fast at the moment and as a result i can eat stupid amounts of food and not get fat

i'd like to keep it that way so im going on a healthy diet from now on.. cut out the crap and get more fibre and protein into my diet

also, for anyone with high cholesterol, eating eggs wont affect it, and they're a great source of protein.

Hey I'm in the same boat! Its annoying cause all my old clothes are so unflattering!! Congrats on the first 12 kgs lost! I'm sure you look & feel amazing because of it. Good luck with your following 8kgs

I've been going to the gym for a few weeks now, doing kickboxing & quite enjoying it. I'm starting to tone up now, I can feel muscles in my arms & i can actually feel ab muscles (although they are covered by a winter coat, hehehe)

hello fellow weight watchers...lol

me and me sister (we live in same house) bought a treadmill for $1000ish - cash discount anyways in about 2 days and 6kms later ive lost about 2kgs..lol
breakfast - 7 weetbix and honey
lunch - lettuce and tomato (love tomato)
dinner - piece of meat vegies (ewww) and water
i havent had a single lollie or added sugar in..... maybe months, only had dark chocolate but lucky 100g worth... been told to drink more water

anyways results are 2kgs loss in body fat, a few kgs put on because of weights, pants keep falling down (good sign, i hope nothing else is shrinking!)..got till end of september as i made a bet with a friend to see who has better results $100 in it

anyways any other advice? im pushing about 4kms a day on the treadmill now = 400+ calories.....and about 20kgs on the bench press, leg press only toning not building
yeah thats about it, saving to buy home gym car can wait.. ;)

You'll find that early on, you won't have actually lost body fat. that 2 kg in 2 days would have been water loss.

Keep at it though. I average around 4000calories expendiature due to exercise a week.

Well today I was very fortunate to sit down and have some intense conversation with Mario Fenech the fellow from tv. Such a nice and genuine bloke.I was working on his car there and we got to talking..He gave me some great tips on weight loss and getting fitter ,particularly after my illness. Thanks Mario you are a true champ and have given me some awesome insights into self improvement.

As a result I am getting off my butt and have made a commitment of 7 kg weight loss in the next 8 weeks. I am starting tonight.

I did go back to kung fu only to cop a fractured rib so I gave it up.

I have only skim read this thread (it is long!!!) but wanted to just quickly note my experience.

Im female, 19, 158cm tall and at the beginning of February i weighed (argg i cringe at saying this...) 90kg. Thing that made me go see my doctor was that the weight had continued to pile on even though I ate fairly healthy and exercised 4-5 times a week. My menstrual cycle (sorry guys...) had never really been regular since it started, but had got worse and worse and I could go for 4 months easily without a period. I was fatigued, a b*tch for most of the time and the hair on my head was falling out.

After some time and many $$$ in specialists later i was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.

A low-gi diet, another exercise session a week and medication to help hormones and 'inability to control your moods(ie b*tch)' and now I am 73kg, so far 17kg. I still have a bit more to lose and the loss is no longer as dramatic week-to-week but i am feeling great. My hair is better (yay!!! it looks okish in my profile pic if you look, that is about 1.5 months old...) my moods are MUCH better, im told, i have more energy and although i havent fully recovered my self-esteem, its getting there.

So anyway, thats the first time i have really fully shared that outside my family and friends, but i really just want to get the message out about PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) because although many people link it with infertility there are other implications. Im glad i found out about it at 19, though i cant help but wish i found out about it before i started gaining the weight and losing confidence because i was fat and nothing i did really made any difference. It is a fairly common problem, but underdiagnosed.

Stick to it, "do it for yourself and your health".

I kinda went off topic, sorry!

Jennifer

Your experience sounds VERY similar to mine.

It's amazing once you find out what's causing the problem how easy it is to change things.
I was told I had PCOS at 16, but none of the doctors told me what it involved or what else it did to me.
I found out by accident when my Dad was diagnosed diabetic.
Bought him a Low GI book with recipes, and read some of it before deciding to give it a go myself.

I'm just over halfway to my goal weight.

Wow a weight loss thread on a car forum, LOL, who would have thought.

I was as big as 132kg (179cm) a couple of years ago and am settled around 85kg now with lots more muscle than I ever had when I was 132kg. Got down as low as 77kg but with the size I have that was pretty much unsustainable without 45 mins fairly intense cardio per day. Still have to watch what I do though as that fatty inside me is always waiting to bust out, if I eat too much of something I shouldn't I HAVE to go and pay for it in the gym, just something you have to do not to become a fatty again. But I am determined to never go back there.

Edit - Just thought I would add how I lost all that pudding. No diet plan or exercise plan to speak of. Just eat a lot less and definitely restrict carbs while hitting the gym pretty hard. Is not rocket science, less food in but with more energy expended = weight loss. I really find the elliptical style machines are great for burning calories but I do a bit of everything. I try to mix it up, would go pretty hard on one thing for a month, like one month I did between 2 and 4km in the pool every day without stopping, then went in the gym the next month on the elliptical/ski machine etc. Then when I had lost most of my size I started hitting the weights, HARD. And no rest between sets etc. so I can do weights while at the same time getting cardio workout. I can lift heavy and average over 140 beats per minute for 45 minutes if not mucking about. A good workout out on the elliptical will see average up around 165 beats per min for 45 minutes. Resting rate is now down to around 50. Get a heart rate monitor watch, the Polar F11 is quite good, and it is a great motivator. Helps prevent you from being slack.

I haven't read the entire thread so if this has already been mentioned I apologise.

I recently got onto a site called www.calorieking.com.au You pay a small fee to join but the best thing is the calorie calculator. You enter your food in each day and it measures the calories, protein, fat etc. Pretty handy if you're trying to watch yourself. I've personally found it useful.

i just skimmed through this thread. i went on the tony fergusson diet about 2months ago. its the one you get from terry white chemists. i'm 185cm and weighed 117 when i started. i lost 6kgs in the first week now i'm down to 103. you have 2 meal replacement shakes a day, no bread, pasta or rice your supposed to drink 2litres of water a day eat a palm sized portion of meat, chicken or fish and 3 cups of vegies a day. it works well but now when i have the shakes i get bad stomach aches within 10 minutes. i dont think its something the body likes for too long. so i've gone off it today still another 10kgs to lose if i stay off the junk food it should work. those shakes cost around $65-$70 a week.

Want some real advice taken from my wife whom is a competitor in the Australian National physique competion...after 4 kids...

3 Days of weight training
5 Days of 1/2 hour cardio minimun no less than 30mins.

Diet....

Breakfast..

1/2 cup dry measure rolled oats cooked
2 egg whites + 1 whole egg ( scambeld poached )

Morning tea...

Protein shake and one peice of fruit ( any )

Lunch..

Ham , turkey, chicken or tuna with one and a half cups of salad. ( as much green leaf as possible)
Can have that on wholewheat mountain bread or on it's own.

Afternoon tea..

Protein shake and 15- 20 raw almonds ( cuts out the carbs in the afternoon)

Dinner..

Chicken or white fish with green vegies or salad.

Late snack...

15 to 20 almonds or 60 grams of low fat jelly.

1 cheat meal allowed per week....meal ....not day.

No regular sugar...tablets or powder....no full cream milk at all....skim milk only. Her best results have been with powerded skim milk...and it's much cheaper. At least 2 litres minimum of water as well.

If you follow this, you will lose weight fast, providing cardio and weight training is included.

Originally she was a size 14....after our third baby she was a size 18...after adopting this routine she went from a size 18 ( 96 kgs ) to a size 8 in less than 12 months....found she was pregnant again with our forth child 6 weeks out from competion....weighed in at 59kgs. At the time of birth of the 4th child she was 69kgs. After baby, she dropped straight to 62kg's. Within four weeks of having the forth she was back at 59kg's or 22% bodyfat. Last week she weighed in at 16.5% body fat and will be in the national comp in 5 weeks time and is on track at this moment for a body fat of only 9 -10 % or 55 kg's. She looks fantastic at the moment with a full six pack and looks very cut and very trim. Her comp is at Central Coast leaques club october 8th.

Cheers

(hope I'm not repeating someone)
My wife uses the " T.J. Diet " when she wants to lose a few Kg's , she was given it by a "European Lady" when she worked at Dulux Paints in the early 80's . Might not work for everyone , but Mrs finds it quite good :-

T.J Diet

• Guaranteed to lose 10-17 Lbs in ONE week
• Must stick to it Religiously

The biggest key to sustained and maintainable weight loss is reform to your lifestyle that becomes normal.

For me it has become riding to work on my push bike. I get about 70 minutes a day of cardio exercise. 350 minutes per week. Just by embedding it into my routine. I'm now 80.0kg down from about 95kg less than 12 months ago.

Its no slower for me to bike to work than catching public transport. And now I even get out on weekends - this weekend i'm going to ride up Mount Dandenong to try and set a personal best up there.

I'm chewing through about 4000 to 9000 calories a week just in exercise.

But how quickly does either the weight return - and how maintainable is this sort of 'diet'. A diet isn't something you 'go on' to lose weight. It is something you reform to improve the health of your life.

There is little point doing something in a week - losing 4kg of fluids, and then just having that come back on over the fortnight.

In todays lifestyle you need something you can stick to, to improve your overall health. A one week splash in the can ain't going to do it for you.

I don't agree with the breakfast but the rest makes a lot of sense as a guide to proper food sizings. My only problem with breakfast is that people often don't have time - additionally the amount of protein intake in that daily snapshot is huge required if you are constantly working out and tearing muscles. So cut out the eggs for breakfast, just have rolled oats, in skim milk with some sultanas, cinimon (not cinimon sugar!) and 1/2 a banana. Nuke it for about 2 minutes 30 and while you wait eat the other half of the banana or share it with your partners breakfast.

That with sensible amounts of cardio each day i've lost ~16kg, now got a BMI of 22, a size 34 waist (down from 38) and about 12% body fat.

From a medical standpoint I have no measurable cholesterol, blood pressure of 110/65, resting heart rate below 55, max heart rate over 200, and last weekend on a bike ride I managed to sustain an average heart rate of 188bpm for over 20 minutes.

So my physical endurance is through the roof from 12 months ago - with nothing more than riding to work.

But big congratulations to your misses - thats a sterling effort.

I've just started a very similar thing last week. My wife is on Tony Fergusson, but I am on Optifast (only because we had some left over from her dad who tried it a looooooong time ago - and I used it last time to fit into my wedding suit..haha)

Anyway, I started it last weekend following the optifast rules. A shake for breakfast and lunch, and specific vegies and protein for dinner. In between I've been eating fruit, veggies and low fat jelly if I'm hungry, as well as attempting to drink 2ltrs of water a day!

I didn't weigh myself to begin with, as Im not formally in it and I couldn't really be bothered, however I have weighed myself on sunday. From the last time I was weight, I estimate I've lost around 6kilos in the first week....which is quite a lot! But theres a lot of Andy...hahaha

I realised a while ago that the easiest solution is to just be happy with what you are. Personally, I'm tired of dieting. So I figure I'll just embrace what I am

Just be happy the way you are. Life's too short to worry about dress sizes and whether or not to eat that 2nd slice of cake :
