Is it a falcon?

Then you have a slight whine at low speed.

New oil won't fix it, i wouldn't reckon.

I changed the IRS diff oil in my S1 fairlane about 6 months ago, but i dont have the bottle anymore. I ended up getting something off the shelf from Bursons made by castrol. A mate that works there called a few of his oil suppliers and confirmed that it is compatible.

Go to repco or somewhere like that and ask the question. They should be able to match an oil based on the mobil part number.

I think I used Castrol SAF XA.
Make sure you can get to the filler hole to put the oil back in.
I have a V8 and the exhaust runs too close to the diff so needed a small pump and extension hose to refill

Find a good diff specialist, and get the whine checked........a pinion bearing replacement now with the right pre-load will cost you $, but much less $ than wearing your gearset through hardening in 12 months time or thereabouts....

Fleety
My LSD had a slight whine & was a bit clunky
Had it serviced by Strapp 12 months ago and has been perfect ever since
This is what it says they used on the invoice
Job #5 -Supply Diff additive (was told they get this from Bursons)
Job #8 -IRS Diff Oil SHC ID
I reckon the Diff Oil would be from whoever they had their lubricant deal with at the time but was told the additive is what makes the difference to these diffs
Bursons might be able to recomend a good combination for you
Hope this helps
Cheers

Both Shell and Mobil have look up tables on line, here is the Shell one, I may not have the model right.

Here's the aditional notes from the Mobil site:

Beam axle and non-limited slip differential shown. If fitted with limited-slip differential, use MOBIL 1 SYN GEAR LUBE LS 75W-90 or MOBILUBE LS 85W-90. If fitted with IRS, use Mobilube SHC ID, 1.6 litres. If fitted with both limited-slip differential and IRS use Mobilube SHC ID, 1.5 litres, plus 100 ml. Sturaco 7098 additive.

Hi there,

Can give you the good oil as I used to work for Dana, who made the diffs and was involved with oil testing programes with Mobil and others.

There was only 1 approved OE supplier for IRS LSD's in fact all LSD's use the Mobil 80W-140 SHC ID, and topped up with Sturacco 7098 60ml per fill. This is a friction modifier and aids the LSD properties, if it is not added when you refill your diff you will experience "chatter" due to the american sourced hemispheres not being as good as the old Aussie designed ones, cost cutting measure by Ford.
Castrol SAFX-A is an approved dealer fill. And there is almost nothing between them in terms of performance. I have been involved in much testing of these oils and I can say without bias that "oils aint oils" and I would personally never use anything other than those 2 oils, I belive Mobil may sell this as a a syn gear product under the Mobil 1 range but it must be 80W-140 to be the same.

As I said I have seen the results of oil testing and the destroyed gearsets and LSD's that we have killed with other oils, diff temps reaching 195 C! the other oils just turned to black sludge under this sort of testing and the smell was awful.

Remember what you pay for is what you get.

Sturacco kits are sold to Ford dealers via Motospecs, don't know pricing however I do know that a drum of the stuff is into the thousands of dollers for 195 litres!

My V8 AU Fairmont only runs on Mobil 1 engine oil, DOT racing brake fluid and Synthetic diff oil SHC ID.

Regards,

Kiwikid.
