If I couldn't get rid of a 1988 EA Falcon 3.9 with 170,000 km on it for less than $1000, what chance does he have?

the 8 litre engine is really its selling point, it is a sleeper for sure.

Sounds about right for the age and mileage. That's what most of those NC fairlanes are getting. They are nothing like the EA, and as such command a slightl higher price.
It looks as though the rear airbag shocks are in good working order, maybe that's where they spent some of the 2 grand getting the rwc.
If you'd spent 2 grand on repairs recently, would you let it go for a swansong?
