My Mazda 6 has one of these systems (I-Stop) and whilst I would never have one given the choice, I find it works seamlessly. Startup happens quickly and doesn't impede me or anyone behind me at the lights..
Having driven the car since new (18 months now) I can brake in such a way that it doesn't kick in if I don't want it to turn off...

Ok, so i have this in my focus ST.
To answer some of the questions. The car has auto climate so if the temperature in the car is too cold or too hot the engine wont auto stop. If the battery charge is too low it also wont auto stop. On the Focus the start motor has been upgraded and designed to do more start cycles (bigger pinion, bigger soloniod, longer brushes) 150,000 cycles instead of 35,000. |

We have a 2014 Mazda3 SP25 with i-stop, but the big difference is that mine is a 6 speed manual.
In the manual, for the stop/start to occur it has to be in neutral and your foot off the clutch pedal (and pretty sure below 3km/h or so). I can drive for hours and it won't even kick in once. I sometimes chuck it in neutral at a red light but not if I'm at the front of the line, don't like being the slow car at the front holding every body up when the lights go green!!! Just returned from a 700km drive in highway, mountain roads and urban conditions and it never kicked in once. Never an issue for me. So there's the solution to an annoying stop/start system, by a manual (if it's available of course). |

start/stop technology im all for, esp cutting emissions while everyone sits in peak hour traffic like in the city, eastern freeway/monash freeway car park etc. (to all the vics here).
around your local streets doing the shopping run etc prob not really worth it. but if you spend alot of time stuck in traffic its great!

Taxi drivers I have talked to love the Toyota Hybrids, some even better then the LPG/Dual Falcons.
