Wondering if anyone has had a call like this. A mobile number I didn't recognise called me this morning, some authoritative sounding guy telling me he's with the Victoria Police. First reassures me all is good and I'm not in any trouble, and goes on to say he's calling select people in the area to seek sponsorship for the Police PYC StreetSmart program. He explains how my business will be promoted on tickets for a blue light disco or something. I tell him I don't own a business and am not interested in donating. Before I get off the phone he asks about the business name he has listed for me. Turns out its a FaceBook page I had setup about a month ago but not done anything with. Plan was to do some drop shipping. My mobile number is not listed on FaceBook anywhere at all and for public users there is no way to see that the FaceBook page was created by me. So thinking this has to be a scam I wish him good day and end the call. First thought was someone has hacked my FaceBook but that doesn't explain how he got my mobile number. I'm being paranoid right...
The other alternative is he was legit and using VicPol intell. which is somehow matching my FaceBook group to my personal FaceBook user and then to my mobile number somehow, and using that intell. to cold call. Surely that's not kosher. Starting to think about wearing a tin foil hat. Anyone else had a similar experience? |

Nope, scam, was doing the rounds here in Perth last year. I think if you go to their website it might warn you about a scam of this nature.

Got any links? He explained if he could add me as a sponsor that they would post an info pack out to me. Still sounded dodgy as hell to me. If it is a scam they should get into the intell. game as I risk manage my online presence religiouly. I'm not an easy target. To be able to link up my FB group to my name and contact details is a fairly good effort.

Sounds very sus. Even more sus than a letter addressed to the company asking who was driving one of or registered cars at so and so time and place, which happened to be in the middle of nowhere, and failure to disclose this information would result in the cancellation of the company director's license. Consulted a lawyer and he advised to throw it in the bin, as the threat was all bullocks. Never heard back and years have passed, so it was a scam.

I always ask unknown(to me doesn't matter if they are blocked or not) callers for their number and tell them you will call them back in five minutes, search the number in an online database like "wocalledme".

This is a scam mate, I get this call every year around January/February. The same deal only for the Tassie PCYC newsletter.

I had one that was claiming to be the ATO, they left a message with a return number so I rang back and said it was Senior sergeant **** from the Dandenong fraud squad, and they hung up on me.
So I blocked my number and rang back every 2 mins or so for an hour with the same spiel, every day for a week on my way home from work, they must have blocked private numbers or changed theirs, cos after a few days it wouldn't go through

Any Police officer will be happy to meet face to face at a police station nearby and physically show identity, if suspect ask to meet at nearest police station to discuss in person
