Default Ocetane boosters and Fuel savers.

Hello everyone, Since this is my first post here I think I should introduce my self a little bit. My names Jesse, I'm 17 years old and I drive a 95" 4.0L EF Futura (Still on Learners for another couple of months). I also work at an AutoBarn Shop down in Victoria so I have a fair amount of knowledge on cars.

Ok so now to my question, I was wondering what your opinions are on fuel saver tablets such as the newly released "Dyno-tab" ? Does it actually save you money? I put 55 litres of unleaded into the EF and hit the trip metre on my last fill up and put a extra strength dyno-tab in...Since then the 55 litres is all gone and ive managed to clock up 420km...The RRP on the extra strength ones are $22.99....But I just dont see how they are saving you anything, unless they are making my car burn $23 less in fuel. Opinions? Thoughts?

Oh and heres a link to a dyno-tab site just to clarify a bit more what im on about.
http://www.dynotab.com/index2.htm
Thanks.

G'day mate and welcome to the forums

well these days $23 in fuel is what?... one or two litres?? I say fill up on dyno-tabs alone :yeees:

Seriously though, I don't think it would save you $23 in fuel! That's just under half a tank at the current prices!

Do any of you's use anything similar? I can get the normal strength ones for around $3 each in a 10 pack, but since I didnt really care about saving fuel when I bought them (only improving performance) I opted for the more expensive pro strenght ones. I'll buy the normal strength ones next time if they get good feed back :1syellow1

I've never tried them myself - but I'm always a bit weary when it comes to fuel additives. I always go for premium fuel (I like BP Ultimate), and settle at that. BP Ultimate has detergents that are supposed to clean the engine by preventing and removing deposits, it's also meant to be better for fuel economy and power. I've found it to be quite good.

I had to use octane booster in my old XD (1979 model), but I wouldn't even consider adding anything like that to the XR.
I would doubt it would save you $$ on fuel, it might improve performance in older vehicles, but the idea of putting anything solid in the fuel tank would worry me.

Hmm, Maybe i'll just keep the money and put it towards my next little investment (2.5" straight through and some nice stainless "Hi-tec" Extractors) since they didn't seem to do to me either. Upgrading the exaughst and adding extractors should do more for me any any tablet will ever do

Hey Jesse welcome to the forums.

The onlything solid I have ever put in a fuel tank not mine is a KFC box that used to hold 12 pieces of chicken. lol His car ran out of fuel and no funnel. Had no funnel nothing at all in a mates car and used the box as a funnel and it desloved and fell in the tank. He needed to flush out the tank anyway.

Id say most of those products are useless if your talking about saving fuel, I have tested a couple of octane boosters on the dyno and found them to work on high compression/performance motors but on a stock to mild engine I think you are wasting your money

Very true indeed, waste your money for what, 0.99RwKw?
I have come across many from the Dose `em`and Pray School of thinking, and they have all come to the same conclusion.

Dynotabs arnt new, they have been around in Australia for about 18 months 2 years.
I have used them for 18 months, they are a good octane boost, but i havnt noticed any improvement in the fuel economy figures.

just work on proformance parts as they will give you better fule consumption if it is driven softly. maby a K&N Filter or POD

I think Nulon is the brand I use. I get it from Kmart and put a bottle in every tank with optimax. I only use other stuff in emergency. I have a stock AUXR8 that runs 14.969 with a .305 reaction time. It raise the octane points up to 7 points and doesn't save much in economy but my engine always runs smooth and clean and I pop tyres all the time!!!!! Up the timing 2 degrees and away you go. It has to be at least 3 or kw at the back wheels. Racing fuels cost alot.... this is as close as you get and it still is drivable daily.

Hi Jesse. I saw an advert for Today Tonight or ACA that has a report on fuel booster tablets and the like this week. I checked the websites and the report isn't there so I guess the report will be tonight or some time over the rest of the week.

Hiya Jesse. Methinks this silly additive will do nothing other than take up valuable room in your fuel tank and thus have use less fuel to use.
