There is a heap of hype out there.
I can give a pretty good example of the differences between auto and manual. My car (auto VCT) and DeathXR's car (manual HP). In every way they have an almost identical set of mods (at least at the time) with the only difference being a conservativly tuned chiptorque in my car to counter the horrendous overfueling of the EEC V in the VCT. I also probably had a slight weight disadvantage due to the irs however it wasnt overly significant as DeathXR had a full body kit.. mine has none.

Now, on the dyno in back to back runs he had a 10rwkw advantage on mine. To be expected as thats about what the difference between an auto and manual should be.
On the track it was a different picture. On launch the manual gets the huge advantage over a stock auto. This advantage was approx 4/5th of a car length. From the moment my car reached 3000rpm I was 4/5th of a car length behind. At 1/8th of a mile I was 4/5th of a car length behind.... at 1/4 mile I was 4/5th of a car length behind (with a fractionally faster mph). So for the track, on mildly modded cars (this does not apply to heavily worked cars.. but then again nothing ever does), the auto is the match of a manual after the initial start. if it were a rolling, in gear, start of about 30kph... it would ne line ball who would win.

Neither of us got close to a PB that run but if I remember correct both our PB's are within a 10th of each other. I think a 15.1 v's a 15.0. Given track and conditions thats not a compariable figure though. I would say the manual has a maybe a .2 advantage overall on any given back to back run.... on a stock auto.

did a few runs in my car with a g tech
it was .4secs quicker shifting the auto manually.
stalled to 2000 and had to let it go quickly as it wouldnt hold still at 2000 shifted around 5100 so when the gear changed it was around 5300. Was just hitting limiter of 2nd gear at end.
