Default catalytic converter on LGP

FINALLY proven
I saw the transport inspecter yesterday and asked about having a cat or not on lpg he said no u do not need to have one but he'll double check
he got back to me today and stated that on a light vehicle running only gas you do not need a catalytic converter on the car for pre 2000 vehicles
2000 onwards you need an emissions test done (with no cat) and if u pass(same or better emissions than factory standard for that model car) they can print you out a statement saying u don't need one
This is what i've been told by the QLD transport inspection agency

I think he may have been referring to your writing style, not the clause in the law...

Yes it is Queensland. I had a Police officer on Monday ask me if I was breaking the law. I said no.

He rang his Sargeant to check and then let me go.

Moral of the story. Find the clause yourself, verify it, double check it, and then still expect grief.

What difference would losing the cat do anyway? Especially with how well the current ones work.

on my ebv8, i had a dyno run with just the headers, and then bolted up the rest of the exhaust and did another run, and there was only a few kw different. about 2rwkw from memory.

also, i was told once that if the car was released from factory with a catalytic converter then you had to run one. all egas falcons have one.

That's my understanding as well. If it's OEM emissions gear, it stays on.

Not much gain to consider the hassle of a defect notice. Thanks for the info.

I've heard that you get a lot better fuel economy without a cat, but I haven't tried it so I can't say.

i think in one of the adr's it states any light vehicle made from 1/1/1986 must have a cat convertor fitted.

1986 was the advent of unleaded, or when unleaded became mandatory for new cars being manufactured.

lpg doesn't need to run a catalytic converter. if you have dual fuel you still need one obviously but for dedicated lpg, it doesn't. having said that, its obviously cheaper for ford to fit the same exhaust to all cars rather than make a special one for egas cars so they all get a converter.

if you were building a car that was single fuel lpg, i'm sure you could get it engineered and emission tested to not require one.

There are several types of gas systems:
1) Open loop single point gas mixer for older cars with out engine management systems and cat convertors.
2) Closed Loop mixture control for cars with single point gas mixer and also cat convertors, Oxygen sensor and throttle position sensor.
3) Multipoint Gas Injection - with a Manifold Absolute pressure sensor, cat convertors, Oxygen sensor and throttle position sensor.
4) Multipoint Sequential Gas Injection - the bee's knees.......
