If it was up to me, I would have the 5.3 as the normal V8 option, and the 6.0 (with less power than the HSV motor) for the SS and available as an option for the Calais and lwb cars, and maybe the SV8. In years gone by both Ford and Holden had 2 V8s in their line ups, for the people who just wanted the sound of 8 cylinders the small one was adequate and gave a useful gain over the 6cyls.

Power and torque for the L33 are:

310 hp ( 231kw ) @ 5200 rpm 335 lb-ft ( 454Nm ) @ 4000 rpm

This is a little more than the Gen IV version (LH6).

It shares a familiar stroke (at 92mm) with the LS1 and LS2 but a smaller bore and it also shares the LS1 vacuum cleaner firing order unlike the LS2 which uses 1-8-7-2-6-5-4-3.

They havent always....
VN-VT1 (1988-1999) Holden 5 litres / VN-VS HSV = 5 litres with only the GTS and selected models having a bigger engine

VT2-VY2 Holden (1999-2004) = 5.7 litres / VT2-VY2 HSV = 5.7 litres (all models)

They are also not obliged to do whats been done in the past, but if they wanted bigger capacity for HSV models, they can produce the LS2 at 6.2, 6.5, 6.7 or 7.0) So perhaps 6L for Holden SV8, SS, Berlina, Calais, Statesman, Caprice and Monaro

6.2L for Clubsport, Maloo, 6.5L for the R8, Senator and Grange, Maloo R8, GTO and 7.0 for GTS and a special edition Grange?

I would hope the replacement for the WK Caprice is not downgraded to 5.3L!

The writting is on the wall.
Its a pretty fair bet that LS2 6.0 will be a HSV only motor.
It makes sense to bring in a smaller 5.3l motor for the lower spec cars, 5.3l 230kw tune for all commodore variants and 5.3l 250KW tune for SS only.
Ford have 2 motors and 3 power specs all nicely spaced and it only needs one capacity! 3V 230kw, 4V 260kw 4V 290kw.
Anyway Holden are struggling to make money, their cutting costs and slashing jobs, the LS2 is a more expensive option than LS1, so a cheaper engine for lower spec cars might give them back some margin at the same price point.
The other thing im sure every car manufacturer is concerned about at the moment is the "gas guzzler" image that large capacity V8s portray.
Everyone knows feul economy claims are garbage anyway, the perception is 6L will use more fuel than 5.3L or 5.4L. HSV and FPV can defuse the argument but its tougher for lower spec cars to shrug off, especially when fleet running costs come into it.
Execs with V8's will be worried im sure.

Still makes no sense. Nobody is gonna buy a 230kW SS VE Commodore weighing 1800kg. They are going to buy a cheap second hand VZ 250kW. :

Not if the majority of V8 sales are on 4 year leases and they upgrade every 4 years!!! :
No one is going to stick with a 4 year old car if they can upgrade to the latest toy!
A large amount of SS's and XR8's (as well as HSV and FPV products) are leased to small business owners or execs with novated leases, they are perks and tax write offs!
Companies insist on lease cars with factory warranties and ditch the cars before they become maitanance headaches.. :

I was referring to the pre-85 era when Holden had the 253 and 308 and Ford had 302 and 351. In fact for a while you could get 253, 307/308 and 350 Holdens.

yeah the 3.8 V6 Buick motor was FWD wasnt it ?

LOL motors are just motors, they are not FWD or RWD, neither LHD or RHD they are just motors, but yes the 3.8 and supercharged 3.8 were in FWD Buicks

It came from the Buick Regal (RWD) and Chevrolet Camaro V6/Pontiac Trans Am V6 (RWD). The FWD-application variant of the 3.8 (L67) never made it to Commodore... the engine we got was L something else.. L32 I think.. something like that.
