Once a year, every year, many sections of the media publish or broadcast a story aimed specifically at the most gullible in society. It usually consists of a "fact" or two so utterly ridiculous that it must be true and is always supported by a small group who see it as final proof that they were right all along.

Flying penguins, spagetti tree parasites, demolition of historic buildings, metric time, proof the moon landing was faked, icebergs in Sydney harbour and jumbos going under the bridge are just some of the stories that were presented only to be revealed later as a joke.

Which month issue of WHEELS is this article in?

And I would take the M3...

M3
0-60 mph (97 km/h): 4.5 - 4.7
1/4 mile: 12.7 @ 184.8 km/h

W-427
0-100km/h: 5.17 seconds
1/4 mile: 13.34 @180km/h

They are close but, and having said that it does take the fight up to the Euros...

But so does/can an F6....
You and I know the W is quicker than that. The conditions weren't ideal, and more so against the F6, but the rolling acceleration times do show how lethal the W is, it's clearly quicker than the ballistic F6.

Look you two carring on like your the two coolest kids in school.
If you think that 2.4 sec is worth 80k . I suppose we must just follow you i beleive its great value . The Gts would of got that time with a set of slicks . Hell the vauxhall bathurst s edition is 100k and the specs blow the w427 away .

Yes it quick and commands respect but its overpriced

Actually according to wheels in the same issue:

M3
0-100 Kph 5.3 seconds
1/4 mile: 13.4 @ 174 km/h @$170K

W-427
0-100km/h: 5.17 seconds
1/4 mile: 13.34 @180km/h @$155K

This is despite the fact that the W427 is a large sedan and the M3 is a mid sized Sedan....
We also know the W427 has dipped into the 12's and 4's for 0 - 100kph..

I myself wouldn't go buy wheels times alone, each to there own...and ive seen the M3 listed in the $150's

The cars are actualy close in perfomance specs

427
Performance figures
Power 500 bhp / 373 KW @ 6500 rpm
Torque 640 Nm / 472 ft lbs @ 5000 rpm
BHP/Liter 71 bhp / liter
Power to weight 0.27 bhp / kg

M3
Performance figures
Power 420 bhp / 313 KW @ 8300 rpm
Torque 400 Nm / 295 ft lbs @ 3900 rpm
BHP/Liter 105 bhp / liter
Power to weight 0.26 bhp / kg

A bit off topic but meh...

do people really buy cars based on fractions of seconds on a straight stretch of road.

obviously thats all the engineers have in mind when they build them too.

Good point, and I bet no one can pick the difference by driving either car.

Car manufacturers do fiddle with gear ratios so that the all important 0-60, 0-100 and ¼ mile times aren’t hindered by having to change near the “yardstick” times.

The Aussie manufacturers also love to fiddle with the engine output/throttle calibration to help the slight prod on the accelerator/large initial response from engine/brain thinks “jeez this things got a bit of grunt” scenario. One of the reasons why drive by wire is popular and why the FG’s throttle control is non-linear.

I’m mildly impressed by the lap times of the local production sedans at Calder. Calder is a “straight line” circuit where power/torque is very important. I’m flat out doing 1:12’s in a small capacity FWD on R spec tyres so 1:10’s or better on production tyres is very good IMO. I’m slightly less impressed with the braking distances (then again the locals are heavier, travelling quicker and lapping quicker so that balances things out a bit)
