Default has anybody ever tried this??

I heard from a few people that if you lock your key in the car (keyless entry) and have a set sitting at home. you can call somebody with the spare remote with your mobile and aim your phone at the car and get them to press unlock no matter how far away they are.
I find it very hard to believe but people say it true.

The new ones are radio controlled, as are the old ones. Infrared ones would be like the remote you use on your TV and would never work out in the sun.
A telephone can only play back a small range of frequencies - up to about 3kHz. The frequency used to lock and unlock your car is generally around 433MHz.

It would never work. Plus telephones use the frequency of around 700-900MHz

would't really want to try it, my luck is it wouldn't work, and I'd end up stranded.

how do you lock your keys in the car with keyless entry?

I'd be tempted to test it, but i don't see how you'd lock them in in the first place..

IR will work in the sun the problem is it needs line of sight (can sorta get around it with half a dish around the reciver but nothing special) so RF is better as you can use the reflections as an advantage.

A bloke I used to work with owned a Mercedes Benz C180, one day he dropped his keys in the boot while the rest of the car was locked, shut the boot, and voila. No spare keys, so $400 and a 2 week wait for the keys to be shipped out from Germany before he could get at his car again. Not easy to do, but doable.

I tell you what ,put your wallet in the the car and post your keys over to me with you moblie number and when they get here I'll ring you ,That way you are sure to find out if it works or not and then I'll post them back .Having you car in the driveway for a week with you wallet in it is a good way to find out .

Once bright direct sun light is on the receiver it would be very hard if not impossible for it to work.

While going OT, They have used IR in networks (even across a rooftop). problem is things getting in the way cause issues.

Really? What kind of intensity of IR do they use? With the half dish around the receiver, is it's intended application to avoid direct sunlight on the receiver? I could see it working that way only..

It doesn't work. Mythbusters summed it up quite well. I have tried this on numerous occasions with several phones just out of interest and it never worked. I tried it with a mates VX, VY and VZ Commodore (my mates a Commodore nut : ), My EFII Fairmont when I had it, My BA XR6 (and I tried both sets of keys), Dad's 08 Hilux, Peugeot 405. The fact is that the frequencies used are lower than the 900/1800/2100 MHZ range used by mobile phones so it is physically impossible for it to work unless the car in question uses a higher frequency.

I'm not talking about LED TV remotes, you have 5 different levels or IR. I actually read some stuff today about the militry using it as a short wireless communication.

It can be done but you got to use the right frequencies (like Fibre optics) and the gear wont be cheap (naturally).

Yeah I understood that, LED TV remotes are impossible outside when there is a bit of sun.
Might have to look it up!

You under estimate the convenience of pockets, they really are quite handy in these situations.

I don't really know anything about transmitting radio frequencies, but can someone please explain this: A mobile phone has a microphone to receive sound which is transmitted to where ever the call is going, so then how does a microphone receive a radio signal to be transmitted? Or is there something else on the phone which can receive the frequency to transmit?
