Exclamation V8 Camry's !!

The Los Angeles-based TRD (Toyota Racing Development) opened for business in 1979 with a focus on aftermarket and racing parts for Toyota.

TRD have designed and built engines for CART, Indianapolis, Pikes Peak, NASCAR truck series, off-road, sports cars plus speedway victories and championships across North America.

The top NASCAR competition is the Nextel Cup. The second tier Busch Cup runs similar sedans and there is a Craftsman Truck series for racing pickups.

Nextel Cup cars run 5.7 litre V8s, producing 640kW at 9000rpm through a four-speed gearbox. Top speed is 320km/h. Wheels are 15-inch, there are four disc brakes with the 1550kg cars coil-sprung on all corners.

The NASCAR Camry V8 engine is 44 pounds lighter than its rivals.

Busch Cup cars and Craftsman trucks run similar specifications but engines are rated at 560kW and top speeds are down marginally.

Most NASCAR races are held on ovals from 800 metres (1/2 mile) to 4.2 km (2.6 miles) in length. There are some races on road circuits.

probably madnc, but the sounds of a v8 Camry rear driven piques my curiosity no end. If its powered by one of those lexus type quad cam v8's it would be certainly something interesting.

Obviously wouldnt have 640kw as a road going car hahaha.... awww I couldn't imagine the damage someone would cause losing control of one being silly...

They have a common chassis but the big four make their own engines.
From Nascar web site .....

NASCAR Wants Toyota to Open Up: It may be impossible to buy a Toyota racing engine or parts to build one. NASCAR is looking for a way to open up Toyota's engine program so that it's open to the independent motor builders. The big three, Chevrolet, Ford and Dodge have open programs so that anyone wishing to build one of those engines, can buy the parts and construct one. But Toyota's program is closed and doesn't allow the independent builders to buy the parts. It's not available to anyone not a part of the Toyota Racing family

The Magna, a few models back now was fitted with a v8 Repco engine with RWD. I think it was an exercise on how well it could compete against Ford and Holden on the track. Went very well and was only a small fraction slower around a track than the other cars.

Wonder what happened to that car??

It's a Pushrod engine as that all that's allowed in NASCAR. It's a heavily controlled formula, even to the point where there are mandatory restrictor plates under the carburettor. Yes, I said carburettor, it's mandatory too.

I get a laugh when people say that our V8 Supercars are low tech, at least they have 6 speeds, injected engines and more!
