b2tf is spot on, but I'll take it one step further and guess that when you turn your car on, the stereo display says "err", not "code". If so, then you need to leave the car on (accessories only - don't have engine running or warning lights on cluster on) for a period of time. The time required depends on how many wrong codes have been entered, and the more wrong codes, the longer and longer the time period gets.

So, turn the car to the accessory position (first turn of the key), and leave it for around 45 mins to 65 mins, and you should see the word "code" appear. If not, leave it longer until it does appear. Once you have "code" displayed, enter the code using b2tf's advice.
