Default EB XR6 vs EF XR6

Hey guys i have been looking at EF XR6`s but i was thinking. EB XR6`s are cheaper and they crack a 7.5 seconds 0-100kph which is faster than the EF. So the EB is quicker. But is it better? I dont know alot about these cars. Is one better than the other. Obviously the EF is newer but that doesnt mean much.

Cheers.

That might have been the case back in the day.

You will find that which ever car is in better condition will be the quicker one these days.

EFs are much better cars in my opinion.

yeh id rather the EB xr6 purely because a) i dont like ef xr front and b) eb xr front is just normal which i prefer anyway. only xr i like is ba/f and el. the eb is lighter and im told has better seats, however it looks older. mechanically they are really pretty similar with the same problems. if they are both manual and in perfect condition i say go the EB.

How many threads do you need to make about EBs and EFs!

The VC should be quicker than both.

EF is less twitchy (due to different diff mounting locations)
EF has smoother engine (more counter weights on crank).
EF has ABS (bad for intercooler mounting).
EF has modified standard seats (Sheel in EB far better).
EF uses EEV so it optimises the timing in closed loop operation (good for economy and using better fuel).
EF uses the hand brake drum (dependable umbrella brake in the EB)

from my point of view i like cars to handle. and EF got a revised suspension geometry from ea-ed. much better turn in and it could handle quick direction changes better. that said they got heavier as falcons have done since EA. i'll always say go for the newer car as its tech level will be higher and should have less KMs. but if you can find a nice, sub 200,000km EB XR6, go for it.

It really depends on which one you like the look of more - the EB can easily be upgraded with EF/L parts to make it better (ie, Intake manifold, door trims etc)

I love the early E-series shape, so my vote goes to the EB. I think you should drive them and decide on which one 'feels best' to you.

EB seats are a tighter fit, if you are small they will hold you in place better, if you are big they might be a PITA to get in and out of.

If you are going to modify the car you buy, some things to consider:

EF ABS works better than EB, though both modules are in the way if you want to run intercooler piping, I think the EF one is smaller though, so should present less of a problem.

You can fit an AU rear diff 'hat' to either the EF or EB to lower the rear roll center, which will improve handling, also change springs/shocks/swaybars to change how the car feels on the road, so the better handling of the EF may not be so important.

EF has coil packs factory, which work better than a single coil in boosted applications, also serpentine drive belt which is more reliable, but they have the broadband manifold which means pipework for turbocharged applications is longer and gets hotter, bad for power.

Just some things off the top of my head you might want to think about.

I reckon you should make your choice based on which car has the nicer shape/interior, because everything else can be easily changed....

Drive them both and I'll bet you come away wanting the EF XR more. It's a newer car, so that really should come as no surprise. Newer cars are generally better cars.

Can't really think of a Falcon that hasn't moved the game on with each incarnation (EL, maybe???)

Unless there is a massive price difference between that can't be ignored, the EF/EL would be the go.

il go out on a limb here and say that they didnt make as many EB xr6's as they did Ef Xr6's?? making them harder to come bye , especially in good nick... but its preference... Ebs had lip spoilers, bucket seats, momo steering wheels Black paint (never seen a black Ef xr6)... Ef's had better styling, nicer ride, nicer looking interior...
but bang for buck go the Eb :

Im not looking into boosting at all so that doesnt matter. The EF is newer yes and i think it would be easier to find. There havnt been many EB XR6`s around in the last year especially manuals.

And is it hard to find one that has not been thrashed?

I have an EL xr6 and my brother has an ED xr6. I haven driven his car yet but he prefers mine over his. Though mine has only 120K on it compared to his 300K. He thinks mine is quiker than his and his is manuel and I have the auto. Both are great cars and are gard to find in good condition. If you see either in good condition pick that up.

haha 300,000K will make any car feel like crap, unless its a magna, cos they were crap to start with but keep the same level of crapness even after 500,000KMS :P

I own an eb xr8 and an ef xr6. Alright the eb has a bigger engine but that aside i enjoy driving my ef xr more, everything just feels that much tighter and it handles a hell of a lot better. Nothing a new set of springs probably couldn't fix, but i'd choose the ef.
Thats just my opinion. But they are both great cars

EB's are getting a bit long in the tooth now. The EF looks better, and besides being a bit slower out of the factory, has numerous other improvements over the EB. I thought this would have been a no brainer......
