Default Transmission Cooling Lines

Could anybody tell me which is the return line from the Radiator back to the Transmission on an AUII ute. Is it the line with the rubber hose joining it, between the Motor & Radiator. I want to fit a Transmission Cooler, after the cooler in the radiator.

When in doubt disconnect both lines and lay a huge rag in front of them and then start it for a poofteenth of a second and shut down. One line will spray s**t loads out compared to the other and there you have the high pressure line so come out of the low pressure radiator into the external cooler and from the other side of the external cooler to the box.

It doesn't really matter which one is which, if you fit the cooler by itself bypassing the radiator. If you want to be silly and put it in series with the radiator, then the easy way to check is start the car in neutral/park, let it idle for about 30 seconds, then shut it off. Then feel the 2 lines - the hot one is the feed line and the cooler, but still warm, one is the one from the radiator - this is the one you want to connect in series with.

My remark about being silly (above) relates to the common failure of the brass/copper piping inside the radiator, which blocks the transmission cooler lines and causes the transmission to overheat. So if you connect an external cooler in series,
then you will not save your transmission if the internal pipes do fail. Installing it as stand alone is the only way to be sure, and the largest external cooler (say a V8 one if you have a 6) is the way to go to get the best cooling efficency.

Thanks for the replies. I have read all the pros & cons regarding stand alone or in series coolers. I bought a 18" "aluminium fin tube" type, as I drive my ute on a lot of dirt roads, & have had the misfortune of have stones damage previous coolers in other cars.

I have fitted a Smart Bar, which removes the plastic stone deflector from the front bumber

I know that the tube type are not as efficient as the radiator style, but are stronger. I mounted mine under the bonnet catch so it is as far away from the road as possible whilst it will still get good air flow. .

This is the reason I am running series.

I have a 6x2 AUII 6cyl ute, with a 3 metre steel tray. So when the missus is carrying the slide on camper & towing the horse float with the kids ponies the tranny is working hard.

Twin rear axle ... only the forwardmost of the rear axles has a diff and drive to them.
It's a 6-wheel conversion to handle extra load carrying capacity ... the rear axle is a lazy axle.

That's clean ... what colour is that ... doesn't look like a factory colour.
Normally the 6-wheelers I see are just stockers with a basic aluminium tray on them.
Like the underside boxes on it ... suits it well.

You'd be able to fit 2 pallets and a skid on that ... you're a courier companies dream ... well ... if you have LPG on it ... it'd be even better

It's called Tiger Gold. I think it is a GMH colour. I only bought it 2 months ago. Body is by Gibson Bodyworks. Tray is 3 x 1.8 metres. Cheque plate floor, 17" wheels 235/45 tyres. GVM is 3450kg.

Ahhh .. Gold ol' Tiger Mica ... was a common colour used in resprays ... looks pretty good though ... some lights it can be more orange in hue as well.

The original owner had a fleet of trucks. Had all his fleet resprayed that colour. P.S. Company went into receivership.

He paid $54,000 new + respray.
