they seem to be a good cheap way to get into some moderate performance, personally i'm not a fan, just be sure to do lots of homework on imports before purchasing.

Go the V8 version if you can (3UZ-FE) I think it's rated around 220kw and is DOHC the 2JZ version is overated.

Even if they are slightly over-rated I still think that they are a pretty good engine.

The 3UZ-FE is the better pick, if you wan't a real straight six go BMW or the good old Ford Aussie Six which has a stronger bottom end and makes huge amounts of torque when turbocharged.
Seeing as your a ricer fan rev28k your obviously biased as I am towards Fords but it is obvious that a lot of vehicles in the ricer scene are overated biggest examples being Hyundai Excels, Nissan Pulsars and non-evo Lancers. Nissan put better investment into their sixes than Toyota so I know it's cliched but a Nissan RB engine is the better pick but I personally would recommend a SOHC XR6 as they are extremely underated vehicle with a bulletproof bottom end |

Make sure all the electronics work. Being a high end Toyota/Lexus there is a lot of electronics in them. I was going to buy one about 5 years ago. Never happened though.

The 3UZ-FE is a beautiful engine but at the end of the day it depends on what your after. If you want power, the after market for the 2JZ is huge, I know of a few guys that run 9's and don't seem to have too much problems. If you want to cruise around then I would suggest the 3UZ-FE. |

The V8 has everything you'd want in as far as specs go ( quad cam, SIX bolt mains), can rev and make good power but has been left behind on the aftermarket front. The 2jz is massively strong, an uprated turbo and an uprated fuel supply will see better than 500 hp on the dyno. Anywhere between 600 and 900 HP have been recorded more than just once on a stock bottom end with an appropriate sized single turbo. There have been 2jz powered cars into the low 10's on stock internal engines (crank/bearings/pistons/rods/head/bolts - maybe revised cam timing), so advocating the v8 to be the pick of the two is kinda misleading. Just do some research, There are heaps of forums around that deal with 2j powered vehicles, and they'd have better answers for you than I. |

i agree with Decadentia, i dont think the 2jz is underrated really especially incomparison to the v8 verision. my brother is into imports a bit and reading some of his mags and other stories that come thou him, i have good reason to believe that the stock internals will be able to put up with 500 -600hp before you will be considering strengthing the internals (for the most part but not always). i dont know that much about the v8 thou.

Truth be known mate the models you'd be looking at would actually have the 1jz engine in them, which probably doesn't quite have the reputation that the 2j has, but is still a capable engine. They're a reliable engine and they have toyota reliability on their side, so not much goes wrong IF everything is sound and as it should be.
As I mentioned, there are forums that deal with the JZ series engines, they were in soarers and aristos, so find a forum that deals specifically with them and they'd be able to help you a bit better. The V8 model would have the 1uzfe engine in it. |

Normally they are fairly reliable but, find out as much as you can about the service history. A well kept and serviced one shouldn't give you much problems. If it's been a bit neglected and not serviced regularly then your better off leaving it alone.

Guy at the end of my street had a lexus v8 version with twin pipes, may not have been going fast but it sounded terrific. Very throaty rumble.

I have driven both V8 and TT version in 92 models. The TT had so much more poke, the V8 was sluggish. Relatively cheap car for what you get. Look for a TTL or similiar, but the issue is, the clocks are quite easily put back, so you don't really know what you are getting. Not many come with LSD, but a few are optioned with reverse cameras, leather etc.

The 3UZ-FE is the cruiser spec, the performance versions used the 2JZ-GTE. There are a couple of Aristos with the 2JZ-GTE that are running 13s with just intercooler, exhaust and FCD. The 2J is over engineered since it was always meant for luxury/performance useage. The 3UZ is just as over engineered, can't remember if the twin turbo 3UZ Celica runs stock internals. Word of warning, while fairly cheap to buy, they can be VERY expensive to fix.

The 3UZ-FE was a brilliantly designed V8 that gave the Chev and Ford V8's a good run while the 2JZ is a BMW wannabe.
