No matter how fast a 6 is, or how many V8s it can beat, there's nothing more satisfying, then a 5 Litre rumbling, just outside your window.
There's more to cars, then outright power and speed. I would gladly sacrifice power and speed, in a V8, just for that sweet sound. Last edited by Ryan; 12-10-2006 at 05:02 PM. |

You can't beat the note of a bent eight. I drive the new model 6's at work and my 8 year old V8 just feels so much better, more responsive and more acceleration.
If you go for a drive in a turbo or SC 6, it is a different ball game for me, but you still don't get the sound of a V8. The current model V8's are so much stronger than the standard 6's. V8 for me anyday.

well, i went from a 351 XD with 2 1/2 inch straight through zorst and extractors, to an '88 CFI 3 speed EA *cringe* and now 5 litre EB XR8, i dont think i will ever go back to a 6...
and as for fuel economy, the XR8 uses about the same amount as the EA, and we wont mention the XD for that.... ![]() |

100rwkw was just a figure i plucked - i was more to the point of why soup up a n/a 6 when for similar $$ you could get a stock 8 - and then save up and mod that? same for an xr6t?
case in point: a ba xr6 at auction over here would go for about 22k xr6t about 27k with 5k you prob could make that xr6 just as quick if not quicker than the xr6t - but why not buy the xr6t, run around stock for a while, save some $$ and then mod that - you would then laugh at n/a 6's. That was my point anyway. Anyway if i was this guy i would not buy the xr8 - i would rather an xr6t....more power to be had, drives just as well etc. It doesnt have that rumble but you wont notice it because you have been driving around in a 6 anyway. If you have to get an 8 get a late model SS - cheaper and with some breathing mods and an edit, you will be saying x-r-what? *puts flame suit on* heehee |

well eversince i got my licence i have been driving a v8 and il tell you what its AWESOME!. Only problem is the mods section, you have to pay heaps more to get good power results. An I6 and turbo goes well i reckon, i wouldnt mind owning something like that on the side.
Il never convert, but cruising in a v8 makes you fell, well tough. Even though my 1st gear feels so slow, after that the top end torque kicks in its as if its a different car. V8 weekend cars, 6cyl everday use. |

Here is another view.
I have owned and driven various sixes ranging from a 202 vk , EB 4ltr, EF ,etc Alloytecs, BA/BF 4 and 6spds. After Owning the 3V and driving other 8s in VY and VZ guise I would never go back to a 6 in anything. Unless it was force fed. The v8 revs easier and cleaner and has has endless torque. So I am converted. And I dont mis being the owner of a 6pack in this respect. You even notice or it feels like the 6 in the BA revs slower compared to the v8. Barra and Boss |

Davro_xr6: as you can tell i was swayed from the 6 to the 8, had an EL I6, BA I6, BF I6, then when it came time to sell it for work reasons, went for the EL V8 which i've wanted since i was a kid (a v8 that is). It is stock and sounds nice but has about the same pull if not less than an I6. The EB i am madly inlove with. Rebuilt, worked.. loud, powerful. I will never ever go back to a 6, unless it's got some form of involuntary aggrovation :P About a third to half throttle in the EB, Sunroof up to let the noise in, makes me feel all special inside :P. I need to get more video to put up. The constant torque, no matter where you are, is just magic. |

I want a L67 and with the right mods it will have more torque then any 6 or 8 built here today, And still be nice on fuel. It's something different but a week in a V8 might change my mind ![]()

With fuel prices being what they are I tried to be responsible and bought an na I6. Within four weeks I had given it to my old man and bought a BA XR8.
But I've since repo'd the I6 from my old man and am throwing a turbo on it. Already got three V8's in the shed so its about time I mucked about with a six. |

I luuurve the sound of V8's, and the boss is one of the sweetest sounding engines around. That being said, I wouldn't buy a BA XR8, because of the handling. I took my bosses manual BA XR8 for a spin through the hills, and you really feel the weight of that massive engine in the front. In anything remotely twisty, I'd much rather be in my AU XR6, or, even better, an XR6T *drooling*

My brother has a BA XR8 and around town with reasonably sedate driving he cannot better 20l per 100 kays. It does sound good and have reasonable low down torque, but for the performance on offer I can't help but think the consumption is excessive in this day and age. My last family barge was a VX Wagon with a Gen 3 5.7 and while it went well and was fantastic on fuel (MUCH better than my current AU3 I6) it was very unresponsive, had zero low down and didn't really sound good. I much prefer driving the AU I6. Sure it doesn't have as much top end, but for normal driving it is far more effortless and relaxing to drive. I wouldn't say I'm a convert from 8 to 6 though, I still love my 8's! |

Had a fairly quick n/a EL (GreenEL remember) and there is just no comparison between it and the XR8. The feel, the sound, the low and mid range power. The poor old EL 6 just didn't have anything on the 8 sorry.

I love V8s, but will never buy one until they can beat the F6 for performance.

im a 6 lover. why? i dont know but atm i drive a pretty warm 6 and my next car will be a 6 force fed or not no doubt about it. i love the 8's but theres something about them i just prefer the 6 as an engine.
more expensive to get power but damn you surprise a whole lot of people. most ppl just laugh ha ha its a 6 its rubbish but they get surprised. just something about the erratic worked 6 pot idle and that scream it puts out at high rpm that gets me going. cant help it.

You cant beat 8cyls firing at 6500rpm, the sound is something that get addictive, you will even find that you will lower the stereo volume and open some windows just to hear the induction and exhaust noise, you just cant get that right tone to come out of a 6cyl. Ive heard all 6cyl exhausts redback, lukey in 2 1/2 and 3inch and i think they sound really well on idle but once opened up they just sound strained and like they are dying in a hole, it sounds like a fart that has to be pushed out. They just dont have that wind your window down and have a good listen sound to me.

Good to see alot of peoples opinions and reactions!!
And while I've fallen in love with the grunt and sound of the V8 - that dream will have to wait a little while longer, need the required cash flow first... But when the day comes I'll be putting my butt firmly in the seat of the XR8 for sure!! May still keep the 6 around cause she's alot of fun though!! ![]()

Depends on what you want out of an engine. In some engine transplants people use a V8 because they need a cheap engine that can produce a lot of torque and when it is set back in the chassis the weight distribution can beat an I6 (shorter block mounted closer to the back). I6’s need a longer engine bay (although it can be narrower) – look at the strife Jaguar were in with the XJ40 they deliberately designed the engine bay so that only a 6 would fit in (they didn’t want to be forced to use Rover’s 3500 V8) and then they had to redesign it to eventually accommodate a V8 anyway.

Have you heard the Dohc 6's modded? mine has pacemakers and twin 2 1/4 inch exhaust and it sounds smooth as silk sorta like the supra note but deeper and chunkier but not rough just smooth. everyone that hears it loves it. and it sounds far from strained sounds like it wants more and more.
