VW Beetle or Kombi or type 3 even. Air cooled 4cyl motor, great place to start, easy to fix, parts are easily available, its cheap, and with a few bux spent will go pretty well.
You can strip down and rebuild a beetle motor with 3 different size sockets I think it is. A few models handle pretty well too.

ok I'll take a look at cortina aswell
there is an escort van for $250 without a motor lol going to check it out on the weekend.

I'd say a mk2 escort sedan, but that's just my preference.
Cortinas are a bit too block-shaped for my liking. The earlier capris are aslo a good choice, too, but not quite in the same league as the esky's. |

Stick with the escort van as you will have fun playing around with the stuff you can do with it and it will drive alot better than a cortina (sorry guys ) as they are a lite and easy to throw around .
That one for $250 don't sound too bad if there isn't too much rust in it ......good luck and post up some photos of it . |
