Default Holden utes to be built o/s?

SMH article: Holden's dream of building cars in the US

Not sure about it being Holden's dream but according to GMH chairman Denny Mooney they are looking at moving production of the Statesman, Monaro and Ute to the US. The idea is to reduce the number of models produced at the Holden factory, which is currently 14 (compared to Ford's 6).

I can see the logic in producing the Statesman and Monaro o/s as most of the production would be LHD, but I'm not so sure about the ute. They talk about selling it in the US as an El Camino, but surely if they thought that was worth trying they could have done it with the current model?

ptt 14 models, whatever, there are based on the same car just some little changes, i wouldnt call them 14 different models, they really only make 1 car, they just modify them, its not that overkill.

it looks like holden aus is slowly getting tranfered to us

This section is "For General Automotive Related Talk", I'm sure the rest of the Australian car industry is of some interest to members here as well, after all it relates to the future of our country. Many people may not have heard this story, it was in a Sydney paper and on radio but I'm not sure about elsewhere.

Yeah, I'd have to agree with that.
It's wrong that the parent GM company wants to steal the locals thunder now they are being quite successfull.
Weren't they ready to pull the plug back in the 1980's when GMH wasn't doing so well??

I think Denny Mooney will do bad things for GM Oz. All he appears to be interested in is Amercianising Holden more which if I know the Australian public will be their undoing.

It's easy to see the logic behind this as most of Holdens local product lineup are low volume. But at the same time it can't be good for the local industry.

It would be interesting to see how the public andindeed Ford and Mitsubishi/Chrysler reactothis if it goes ahead -- and I'm tippingit will be alot easier to make this go ahead becauseof the global platform crap that Holden is using.

As much as I dislike the dark side, I would hate for local jobs to be lost.

hmmm.... haven't heard that one before. would suck *** if that happens, i weld together the floorpans in the utes, coupes, and wagons at holdens Elizabeth plant. the coupes will be built overseas soon, but i doubt the utes etc will go over there. they'd be stupid to do it, especially considering what they're spending there at the moment.

If this is true then it's a blow for anybody who wants to buy Holden IMO.. Every US built car I've seen has been 2nd rate to be honest. A very very big step backwards for Holden if this were to happen.
Denny Mooney looks to bring nothing but trouble for Holden. He wants to bring Caddy here, is looking to source some GMC vehicles for Holden.. & now this.. bloody scary if you ask me..
