Default Defected!

Just wondering guys...
I got defected last night for having a chrome air cleaner (crank case vented through carby spacer plate) and having a shorter exhaust then what the car originally came out with :\

Anyone else been defected for having extremely common muscle car mods? hah :|

seems to be no matter what you have these days your not safe, i personally don't know anyone who has been pinched for it but have heard around the traps they are more than happy to pinch you for stuff like that.

Out of curiosity was the air cleaner sticking through the bonnet?

Very common to be defected in the 80s for pollution related mods. You car should have EGR so I am surprised they didn't get you for that.

PCV is suppose to be connected to manifold, perhaps you are thinking of your breather. That is suppose to connect to the air cleaner.

Just had a quick flick through your build thread, nice plate.

As for being defected, not much to say about that apart from you look like a police target

Air cleaner doesnt stick through the bonnet no :p
And CS123 the PCV valve is running normal but the crank case ventilation return line, instead of running into the air filter like it does with the stock cleaner, runs back into the manifold (does the same thing essentially) because the after market chrome air cleaner doesn't have a snout for it.

Will be spending today getting it back to immaculate condition, told the cop i'd have it back on the road by Monday and he gave me a smartass "yeah like to see you do that pal"
I'll show him! *shakes fist*

He may be right. I'd be worried what happens when you take it to where ever to get the defect cleared that they do not find other problems. You should have EGR, charcoal canister and oil breather/PCV connected. I am not sure how well it would run with that breather hose connected to the manifold vacuum either.

If you have a holley try and grab a factory air cleaner of a 4 barrel V8 and use it. Then it should have connections for the charcoal canister and breather. You can probably also grab some plastic elbows from a auto store and modify your chrome air cleaner.

would be doing this.. the more standard you can make it present.. the less they may look for..

Shorter exhaust??

Where does it exit?

And how do they know how far past the bumper bar it exited when new?

Many years ago I got done (QLD) for having my exhaust pipes TOO long.
They were about an inch past the bumper bar.
The rules say you cant have any protrusions past the bumper which means ALL cars fitted with towbars are illegal. Anyhoo I didnt argue with him (Transport officer) and i cut an inch off the tail pipes and went into the Queensland Transport office to show them.. The lady at the counter looked at me weird and then appollogiesed!!! as she realised how stupid the defect was (it was just the officer flexing his authority).

Some aircleaners do come with a seperate plastic hose attach bit, which needs to be pop riveted to the aircleaner. But yea it doesnt matter where it goes as long as it goes back into the combustion chamber surely..??

nice uterus, that`s bad luck mate, maybe you could run the ventilation hose to the bottom of the air filter/ wack a chrome tip on the exhaust to bring it out a bit further?, don`t worry mate if you`ve only been defected once your doing well

End of the day, the cops are not mechanics and the reason you are defected is that they suspect your car to be not roadworthy. You then take it to a qualified mechanic to get the car checked over.

And the older the driver also makes it all a bit easier ..... I think I get more WTF's and a bit of a chuckle by Mr plod sitting at the lights than anything else. Dont do anything stupid and stay clear from large gatherings that will cause attention to you is a start. Not the be all and end all though but mine isn't exactly 'legal' ... noise and wheels (295 rear is close to 50mm over std???) .... oh ..... and the odd time the NOS has been accidently been left connected ... no biggy

Knox the other night though was over top and shouldn't be hit like that with the police and EPA .....

About 2 years ago they set one up right outside the Police Academy and randomly selected recruits for breath/drug tests.
I can't see the big deal with it.
There's plenty of people who drink on the job, nurses/ Dr's included. And dont tell me staff don't take something from the medicine cabinet to get through their shift. I have the utmost respect for hospital staff, they have a job to do just like coppers, working bad shifts and putting up with the rabble and poor pay.

I think they should set up more RBT's...the more ****heads off the road, the better.

Back to the mods...no, police aren't mechanics, but they aren't idiots either. They suspect something is illegal, but they're not sure, they send you over the pits. They won't just take your word for it and let you go.
Read the ARD's carefully, and you'll be surprised what you can get away with. And there's nothing sweeter than being pulled over and inspected and having nothing wrong with your car...

Sounds like he had nfi at all , simply run the vent back into the cleaner or replace it which I expect you have done , being a ute you can drop the exhaust against the rear wheel because it's venting the minimum distance from the last opening window , you need a copy of the rules to prove this , it cannot dump under the car so you may need to add a bend , dump behind the wheel will be better if you can , I got pulled the other day in the beemer and all they did was oh and ah , it's all legal inspite of pushing the limits (runs 18 x 9" wheels and large rubber )
and I am older
(first thing he said was " I thought you might have run " to which I made a smart comeback , good luck with it

If it was a Victorian cop just make sure he has not ticked the box which says roadworthy needed.
