It was pointed out in this thread http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthr...929#post789929
by a member that appeared to be a bit hot headed regarding a previous comment, that drag racing is not a real sport. I just wanted to get other members opinions, I understand that some people may not be totally interested in it, but do they still regard it as real.

Certainly is a sport IMO, as is all motorsport. Its a competition with a set of rules, and very clear measure of performance.
I dont understand why some people would think it is not a sport? What would it be if it was not a sport? A hobby? An addiction? Actually, its probably all three at the same time...lol

Although I voted "no" I still love it, and I guess it still is a motorsport.
Doesn't compare to circuit track racing though. |

Of course its a motorsport. In circuit or other racing if you make a mistake you can catch up. In Drag Racing if you make a mistake you go home and try again next time. As previous post says it may seem easy to those with lower powered cars but to me its the most competetive of all motorsports. Thats why I'm hooked for ife.

lets see.. if drag racing is not a motor sport than any 100m sprint ever ran at the Olympics, Comm games, world championships, Euro champs, nat champs, state champs, regional, local, interschool, school, grade, class and little athletics better get called a non real sport.. its EXACTLY the same thing!
It has an unbiased start, a fixed length and a finish where a clear winner can be decieded based on who crosses the line first. If that isnt a classic "race" than what is?

Of course Drag Racing is a real sport. Fair enough you only go in a straight line, for 400 metres, but I would like to see the people who bag it and say going in a straight line requires no skill, jump into a 8000HP Top Fueler and do 0-300Km/h in less then 2 seconds and hold it, without losing control. |

If it's not a real sport , there are a lot of people world wide with expensive hobby's. On the surface it looks like a bit of fun, beneath the surface the skill involved in getting a car down the 1/4 from driver , setup angles is very involved.

certainly is a form of motorsport although a winning result is more about the car than the driver compared to any other form of motorsport. I find it unforfilling competiting in drags compared to sprint racing.

"Macca 779" So doesn't the driver pick the tune and have to react to the lights, pick a dial-in, ensure they don't breakout and still get to the finish line first. Are you a one time competitor at a test and tune or have you tried bracket racing for real? (Probably the first option!)

Its a motorsport with a heavy reliance on machinery as opposed to driver skill.
