Default WT Fiesta Powershift Fuel consumption

Had my Fiesta over 4 months now and fuel consumption read out is 7.0l/100km. This is around a built up area but not stop-start city driving in traffic jams etc. Thought this was pretty good until I checked my wife's Honda City auto read out which gave 6.6l/100km! She does not drive as economically as me so I am surprised that this is lower than the Fiesta despite having a similar size engine and weight plus a torque converter auto.
Can other members let me know what sort of consumption they are getting in various driving?

Our lx powershift is averaging 5.9l/100. Suburbs and highway and using 95 octane. We have also averaged 4.8l/100 on one highway trip. Our style of driving is easy going with no heavy braking and keeping at the speed limit where possible.

7.0 sounds OK. Our powershift gets out to 8 when going to the shops and back, down into the low 5's on the highway

I'm averaging ~8.3l/100km inner Sydney driving, not quite the rush hour commute but close. Got ~7100km on the clock, so hope it'll go down as my odometer goes up.
On the highway, with 3 adults and a boot full of luggage with air con, I was getting ~6.2l/100km

I forgot to mention air con has been on all the time.

I rarely use the a/c except to clear the windscreen, I drive the Fiesta Zetec Sedan extremely hard 60% of the time and cruise the rest. It has done 3 long trips and averages 7.4l/100km over 7500km of driving. I am very happy with the economy. Best I have gotten out of a tank is 745km worst around town hard driving stop start is 450km.

For my Zetec WS model, I get around 6.0 - 6.3/l average - with 95 octane and it is good, less than that on highway driving like for example from Canberra to melbourne.

Well, the economy gauge in my dash says I average 7.1 - 7.2 but the app on my iPhone I update everytime I fill up with my odometer and litres filled tells me 8.3 so *shrug*
I have a pretty leaden foot off the lights though and I do very little highway miles.

mine is similar, my dad thought it might be a case of the engine getting used to itsself. Im not too put off however, the consumption is more than my old peugeot 206 but it is because its a bigger car.

Was going to ask the ford man about tips on economic driving...

The 1.6's seem to take about 10-15,000kms to settle down and get their best fuel economy. Engine seems to like being 'run-in'.

Second, check that you are basing your fuel economy on "actual" real world test - i.e. relying on the trip computer can produce distorted results, but if you measure the litres of fuel you put in the car vs. how far you drive, you will ensure the result is accurate.

Third the aircon in these cars seems to add at least 1L/100km to fuel consumption (not sure why). This is my experience and seems to have been the same from other comments on this forum.

Fourth, make sure you are using at least 95 Octane fuel. Again the experience on these forums suggests that it provides better fuel consumption than standard unleaded.

I didn't know it was *possible* to drive the Zetec hard! Not with only 88kW!

Are you kidding?
The 1600cc Ford engine doesnt go hard!!

Its a gutsy engine that revs cleanly and freely in my book it goes harder than the 2litre in the Focus.

I agree, this little engine doesn't take much to hit 5k rpm and the DSG let's it more often than not. It feels great on the road and Definately feels more powerful than other auto cars with better power/weight, but you pay for it in fuel. If you don't feather the throttle, it blows out the fuel consumption by alot.

Driven both manual and dsg. No doubt the real drivers car is the one with 3 pedals. The dsg is ok - jerky at low speed but decent once the car gets going -but if you want to really drive all the 88kWs of the 1.6 then the manual is the way to go.

Fuel consumption is directly related to:

1) Engine speed

2) Gear being used

3) Amount of throttle being used

4) Other things like weight and wind resistance - these cannot easily be changed so we will discount them

Accelerate gently and change into the next higher gear as soon as you can. The higher the revs and the lower the gear the more fuel you use.

Slow down for lights or corners as soon as possible also - there is no point in maintaining speed until you are right at the corner and then braking hard - that just wastes fuel.

When calculating fuel economy ignore the onboard trip computer. If you don't believe me keep a record of what it shows each fill up, and then compare with the fuel you actually used. Unless you have a 1 in a million car the results will vary randomly, but almost always be optimistic by 4% to 10%.

Regards

Trevor G

Maybe I should take you for a drive sometime on my way home, lol. It loves being thrashed. Once you know how the DSG works, the hill hold button and the "L" position on the PRNDL become your best friends.
