Kind of. When you use the internet, the sites and services you use collecting your data are bound by the same act. So if EVERYONE plays by the rules, then in theory your data should be kept safe. And only the people you agree to give it to will have it.
There is a small loophole however. If the data handler tells you that they are collecting your data to do X (usually done in fine prints and T&Cs) then they can use it to do X e.g. sell it to 3rd parties. How many people read the full T&Cs before clicking "I agree"
