While I partially agree, I've basically never ran the owners manual specified oil grade in any of my cars out of warranty.

I believe manufacturers will use oil on the thinner side to reduce fuel consumption and squeeze a tad more power out of the engine, which is fine for the first 100k or any car you wish not to keep long term.

Manufacturer 'bibles' also have recommend wheel and tyre sizes, boost pressure, engine tunes, exhaust systems, suspension heights and shocks etc but they're not always followed nor are they always 'best'.
