The lane keeping icon displays above the dotted lines which indicate the lane. If you have the can see the lane lines on the display in any colour, including grey, the system should be activated.

According to the owners manual if the lane markings are grey the system is unable to detect the actual lane or your speed is below 65 Km/h, among others.

To activate the system you press the button on the stalk three times when it is off. After pressing the button three times the icon and the lane indicators will appear on the display indicating that the system is switched on.

I hope this information helps as I'm sure you would only get blank looks from the Ford dealer.
